NOTE ** Western Red Cedar offers the advantages of natural beauty, design flexibility, and long term durability; it is one of the few woods with its own preservative oils to protect against decay and insect attack. 1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Inspect the materials upon delivery to assure that specified products have been received.
B. Store materials in safe area, away from construction traffic; store under cover and off ground, protected from moisture.
C. Keep materials clearly separated and identified with grade marks legible. Keep damaged material identified as damaged and stored separately.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Acceptable Manufacturer: Member of the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (WRCLA). ASD.
B. Requests for substitutions will be considered in accordance with provisions of Section 01600.

2.2 MATERIALS
A. Western Red Cedar: WRCLA Western Red Cedar.
NOTE ** Select grade(s) and moisture content of Western Red Cedar from paragraphs below as required for project. Delete references not required for project.

NOTE ** Clear grade decking is specified when appearance of the highest quality is required; available seasoned or unseasoned. Architect Clear(tm) grade decking provides the ultimate in durability and appearance when only the best will suffice. This exclusive product is usually manufactured to individual order. It has a fine grained heartwood appearance with all aspects of its manufacturing and quality control performed to the highest standards of the lumber industry.
1. Grade: Architect Clear(tm).
NOTE ** Custom Clear(tm) grade decking combines stability, durability, and a finely machined surface showing limited characteristics. It can be used directly on the job and is used for custom residences and other applications where fine woodwork is required.
2. Grade: Custom Clear(tm).
NOTE ** Architect Knotty(tm) grade decking provides a rustic appearance, with limited size of tight knots and other characteristics; available seasoned or unseasoned. The smooth, skip-free dressing over the entire face makes it a top choice where the beauty and charm of a knotty deck are desired.
3. Grade: Architect Knotty(tm)
NOTE ** Custom Knotty(tm) grade decking is widely used by homeowners and builders, providing a durable, hole-free knotty appearance and limited size and quality of characteristics; available unseasoned only.
4. Grade: Custom Knotty(tm)
NOTE ** Select moisture content from the subparagraphs below. Note, however, that "seasoned" is not available for Custom Knotty(tm).

B. Fasteners:
NOTE ** Hot-dipped galvanized, aluminum, and stainless steel nails can be used to fasten Western Red Cedar decking. Stainless steel nails are the best choice, although hot-dipped galvanized is the most widely used and economical.
NOTE **
NOTE ** Hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel screws can also be used, however stainless steel screws are recommended. For most applications, No. 304 (18-8) grade provides adequate corrosion resistance; for decks exposed to salt air, use No. 316 grade. Other types of fasteners, such as electro-plated, are not recommended as they can rust, disintegrate, and react adversely with the natural preservative oils present in cedar, resulting in stains and streaks. Copper nails also react with cedar and should not be used.

NOTE ** Blind fastening systems create a fastener-free deck surface. They use metal clips and/or joist top brackets that fasten the sides or bottom of the deck boards to the joists so that no fasteners are visible. Consult local fastener company for assistance and include the following paragraph if blind fastening is required.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
A. Coordinate work with related trades; scribe and cope decking for accurate fit. Allow installation of related work to avoid cutting and patching.
B. Select decking boards of longest possible lengths. Discard boards that are warped, twisted, bowed, crooked, or otherwise defective.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install decking square, plumb, and level, closely fitted and securely fastened.
NOTE ** Include the following three paragraphs if nailed decks are allowed. Delete these paragraphs if other fastening methods are required.
B. Use thin shanked nails with blunt points to prevent splitting.
C. Use 3 inch (10d) nails to fasten decking with nominal thickness of 2 inches. Use 2-1/2 inch (8d) nails to fasten decking with nominal thickness of 1-1/4 inches (31.7 mm). Length may be reduced by 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) if ring or spiral shank nails are used.
D. Provide one nail per joist for deck boards 2 inches (50 mm) wide, two nails per joist for deck boards 4 inches (100 mm) and wider.
NOTE ** Include the following paragraph if screws are required for fastening decks.
E. Fasten deck with screws long enough to penetrate 1 inch (25 mm) into support members. Provide 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) penetration for structural components.
NOTE ** Include the following paragraph if blind fastening system is required for fastening decks.
F. Secure decking with blind fastening system following manufacturer's instructions.
3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Decking may be rejected, whether or not installed, for excessive warp, twist, bow, or crook, as well as for improper cutting or fitting.
3.4 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
A. As work proceeds, maintain premises free of unnecessary accumulation of tools, equipment, surplus materials, and debris related to this work.
